In 1781, when British troops were raiding Virginia, they took a shot at capturing Jefferson at Monticello. While TJ was leaving Monticello via a back road with his immediate family a British soldier held a gun on one of his slaves and demanded to know TJ's whereabouts. The slave told the soldier that he may as well shoot him because he did not know where he was (even though he was near the slave not 5 minutes before. What would happen if the slave had decreed his loyalty, and the British captured TJ?
