WI: King James Hamilton

after king James V of Scotland passed Mary the queen of Scots took the throne at 6 days old, the next to the throne was James Hamilton 2nd Earl of Arran and also the Regent. So if Mary dies in infancy, what would the reign of king James VI be like?

i had looked at this an wondered would a civil war come of this as James Hamilton was from a son of princess Mary, but with Lennox's supporters saying that that could was made invalid from his fathers divorce?

Things would get ugly pretty fast. I'm not sure how much positive support Lennox had for his claim but he would be able to rally the not insubstantial anti-Hamilton faction behind him, most likely including the Douglases. Whether he could rely upon English backing would depend upon whether Arran had the support of the Guises and the French.

James Hamilton was not by most accounts a particularly strong or decisive man - in fact he was a bit of an opportunist or reed-in-the-wind - while Lennox appears to be a rather stubborn and pig-headed gentleman, so Mary's early death could be pretty disastrous.
