WI Iran invaded Afghanistan

On August 8, 1998 Taliban forces captured Mazari Sharif, a city in northern Afghanistan. After this incident, 11 Iranian diplomats and a correspondent from IRNA were attacked at the Iranian consulate and subsequently disappeared. Eight of the Iranian diplomats and the IRNA correspondent were killed by the Taliban militia attacking the consulate. The Taliban denied this and today some think it was really a Pakistani intelligence faction that did the actual killings. Iran put 70,000 troops on the border, and the UN was able to defuse the situation.

Now WI the Taliban just ignore the UN attempts at peace, and furthermore continue their hardliner stances? Assume for the sake of argument Iran goes to war with Afghanistan, what is it like? What are the butterflies?

Iran sweeps through Afghanistan, deposing the Taliban with the help of the Northern Alliance. A friendly government is installed in Kabu and Iran retreats and positions itself to the more friendlier western Afghanistan; which is Shia and Persian speaking. The rest of the country falls back into a civil war. 911 is butterflied away and Bush losses reelesction in 04.

There is already a thread "Iran invaded Afghanistan?" started by King Helu of Wu. Then why is another thread on the same subject? In AHDB certain popular threads are seen repeated in a new form after a period of time has elapsed since the original one is closed. But in this case the thread started by King Helu of Wu is still running in the same section of "Alternate History Discussion: After 1900".

The poster may not have seen the thread. Also you might not like the way a thread went and have a slightly different POD hoping that the Butterflies flit differently.
