What if Custer had kept his entire command, pack train included (with all the ammo) together and only sent out his scouts. The Indians would have seen a much larger force coming against them and may not have reacted as they did. Custer may have been able to avoid the thousands of warriors, and instead attack their massed village and drive through them. Or would there have been over six hundred dead troopers on those grassy ridges and ravines? And if Custer did scatter them after taking out any rearguard braves (they would have been fighting like the Dickens as they say) 600 galloping troopers could have scattered the herds and driven them towards Terry and company.
