How did Boss Tweed of all people become a Communist?

I always get this question.

Well, American Communism is the creation of President Benjamin Adams, and later the warped monster of men like Benjamin Wade and Salmon Chase. Essentially, Adams borrowed the name from his friend, Karl Marx's, Communist Manifesto, as the name of his off-shoot from the Democratic Party. The new party was poorly defined ideologically, and was driven into a State Capitalist route, liberal route. It would come to represent either State Capitalism, Big Government, or general liberalism economically. Which is why we also have Mister James K. Vardaman, who in TTL was a loose economic liberal (though social conservative).

People in Shared Worlds voted for him?

Actually, he came in last place as far as the selection process for President goes, as the President is selected by Congress, and the Communist's had the least amount of members of what was, at the time, a 3-Party System. However, no party gained a majority, and he refused to Coalition with one of the other two parties which invoked the King's Right to choose a President. After striking a deal with the King, he was chosen to become President, much to the anger of the nation. His famous leading of the Communist's to not Coalition came to be known as the Stolen Presidency, the 88 Communist Congressmen being called the "Tweed 88". This eventually led to an amendment which demanded a Run-Off Election between the top two parties/coalition in the case of no majority.

So TTL's communists aren't even communist?

Ongoing Kaijuverse map series. It's been a while.

So, a Godzilla hit Tokyo in 1954. Japan reeled, but survived, it was on par with an earthquake that brought a bit of radiation. People's world view was shaken a bit to see a modern army defeated by a beast, but the creature was apparently dead. A few years later though another struck, this time devastating Osaka in concert with another beast. The second creature was slain, but the Godzilla misteriously vanished into the waves. Japan's economy was devastated. Korean communists used this as a chance to overthrow the Japanese puppet government and Rolisica used it as a chance to further separate it's economy from Japan. Out of desperation the Japanese turned to their former enemies, the Americans, for aid. The Americans feared the spread of communism, and saw Japan's wrecked economy as a likely next domino to fall in Asia and so invested massively to help the nation rebuild.

In 1960 the nation of Rolisica's capital, Nova Kursk (or New Kirk and the Americans tended to mangle the pronunciation), was attacked by the monster Mothra. This beast was apparenty rescuing it's 'fairies' which the Rolisicans had kidnapped. Soon after Peru was attacked by a Godzilla, several cities being ravaged, prompting Peru and Chile to unite in the Pacific Defense League. To further shake up people's world view came the events of London. A beast the size of the American's King Kong was found in Ireland and put on display in London, only for a far larger parent to attack the city and rescue it's young. Suddenly the Pacific was not the only ocean to fear. The Commonwealth was thrown into chaos, long simmering anti-English sentiment in Ireland exploded with the event and soon Britain had a civil war on it's hands. India departed the Empire, while Canada and Australia tried to preserve what they could. The *fascist government which emerged in London after the civil war soon butt heads with the Dominions and lost more than a few colonies in the process.

In 1965 the beast Rodan was discovered in a Chinese coal mine. Capable of supersonic flight it could attack anywhere on earth with little warning, but luckily was much less aggressive than the Godzilla or Gorgo creatures, mostly only attack when provoked or eating heards of cattle. The Gargantuas would raid the California coast until the Americans decided to test to effecitveness of nuclear warheads on Kaiju. (Let's just say the test was a success, but not popular.)

The most important event of the 1960s would be the meteor of 1968. Falling in India's central Deccan the meteor displayed a number of curious traits. Just as curious was a mysterious 'profit' who began warning of impending doom. She succesfully predicted a Godzilla's appareance in the Bay of Bengal (the first Kaiju found in the Indian ocean, which terrified the region), and soon after the arrival of Rodan. Claiming to be a Martian she declared the meteor to be the sign of the end of the world. While most dismissed her claims the mysterious Mothra Fairies arrived and supported her opinion. Then the monster Gidorah sprang forth from the meteor and began to reak havoc upon the region, raining an intermitant path of destruction towards the coast. Somehow the kaiju's Godzilla and Rodan got wind of the creature and moved to combat it, which with Mothra's help they were able to defeat. The mysterious space kaiju returned to the heavens, and the terrestrial kaiju left exhausted. Mothra would die of it's wounds, however a young of it's kind hatched soon after. Rodan was sighted in Siberia a few times.

Now we see the world of 1971, on the edge of the so called 'Secret War' which most of the surface knows little of, and most of the conspiracies about it are half truths at best.

So TTL's communists aren't even communist?

Thanks about the map!

And yes and no. Outside of the United States, Communism is pretty adherent to the Communist Manifesto, and developments as such. In fact Italy went true communist in the 1920's. India, Turkey, Northern China, etc. are all forms of Communist.

It's just in the United States where its completely different. By 1990 however, most American's understand that Communism can refer to two things, and in schools would be taught as "American Communism" and "European Communism" separately.

Marx himself moved to the United States upon an invitation from Adams thinking that his ideals would be interpreted. Alas they were not, and he broke the friendship. He did stay, however, and the Marx family became a prominent Socialistic family which dominated the Peoples Party for a bit before Moderate factions took over eventually turning the Party into the Reform Party. Larry Marx was Minority Leader of Congress at one point.

Here is my latest creation, an almighty German wank which is set in a slightly more dialled back version of my Teutonic China map. I've actually had this map ready for quite some time, but writing the back story has proven to be the biggest problem for me. So instead of writing a massive chunk of poorly written text I've decided finally to give a brief, abridged version of a far larger work. As usual comments and questions are always welcome.

Essentially, the PoD is the rise of a more successful Poland and Kievan Russia in the Early Middle Ages. Whilst normally this would be good for them, here it proved detrimental as the deadly Slavic Plague spreads across the region in the 12th century, killing a large portion of Ukraine and Southern Russia and spreading as far as Poland in the west. While the Slavic states try to rebuild themselves after plagues and civil wars the Teutonic Order managed to find themselves at the centre of a morbid opportunity and expand along the Baltic and into now largely depopulated Russia. Novgorod and Lithuania fell to their rule, followed eventually by Poland after the Mongols had smashed it to pieces in the 13th century. Eventually the Order fell and the aristocracy formed the Kingdom of Prussia in its place and from there went on to expand further eastwards into Siberia (called Tartary in this timeline). In the rest of Europe the Netherlands never formed, instead Brabant and Holland took their relative place in history, whilst the Byzantines fell to a Turkish sultanate led by the Mentese. America (called Duran after the French explorer who initially made the discover) was found by the Hanseatic League and whilst it was quickly overtaken in territory by the French, English, Spanish and Norwegian Empires they still retained their core territories along the *Saint Lawrence.

For the longest time the Prussians remained focused on eastward expansion, but in the early 18th century they began to focus more on Europe once more, getting involved in the conflicts between the Hungarians and the Mentese Sultanate in the Balkans and in the delicate political arena that was the HRE. This culminated in the 1780s as a new King (who was a little bit insane) ascended to the throne of Prussia who was deeply influenced by the political movement of German Nationalism. Under his reign he began a process of military build up to assert what he believed was his rightful claim to all Germany and in opposition to the Austro-Burgundian alliance which had long dominated the HRE. This eventually led to the German Wars, which saw the Prussians conquer the HRE but was prevented from expanding further westwards by a last ditch alliance between the armies of France, Britain, Spain and the German-exile states. With his dream attained he declared the foundation of the German Empire and placed it as the supreme hegemon of Europe, especially after France moved to a position of heavily armed neutrality. The Germans eventually allied with a more successful Egypt and together carved the ageing Mentese Empire between them.

The remnants of the Alliance which had fought the Prussians in the German Wars did not disappear, however, and from that core emerged the League of Free States. Initially composed of Britain, Spain and the Kaapreich (the remains of the joint Hollander-Brabant colony which became the destination of mass immigration after the German Wars) it eventually grew into a global alliance by the 20th century. Vesterrike, the former Norwegian colony which eventually spread across the north of Nord Duran, is increasingly dictating League actions worldwide, especially in Sud Duran as various states are seeking protection from the Spanish descended Extremist Durani Dictatorship. Their eventual goal is to bring what they see as a mad empire crashing down, although when pressed on exactly how they are going to do so they mostly mumble. France, a former enemy of the Germans, have moved into a state of heavily armed neutrality, fearing that if they align themselves too much with the League they will end up as the primary battlefield in the next great war. The League is still confident that with enough international backing they can stand up to the Germans like no single nation could. And there are options open to them, most notably Second Mughal Empire, who are wary of the German backed Afghan Emirate, and the Holy Empire of Nihon.

The year is 1926 and tensions between the League and the German-Egyptian Pact of Emperor's are reaching still seething over 100 years after the end of the German Wars. Germany has significantly mellowed out after the death of the Mad Emperor, but remains an authoritarian place where democracy exists but holds little power to compete with the Emperor and aristocracy. Still, Germans never dominate the region to the same extent as the Russians did in their empire OTL and as a result have had to make more extensive use of the native populations within their Empire. Whilst Germans still dominate the empire you find Poles, Russians, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, Georgians, Kazakhs, Mongolians and Manchurians in positions of authority and power. In Germany your race does not matter, so long as your German is good, are a good Catholic and are loyal to the Emperor. Egypt is a more nasty regime, treating its black population very harshly, but its oil keeps its engines running and is would be tolerated by the League had they not sided so openly with their sworn enemy. It was far more successful in this timeline and has carved itself a large empire in Africa, although it is far less impressive in reality than it is on paper. It's logistics are stretched to breaking point and many in Cairo know that should war come its empire would quickly be overrun by the League, so it would be better to focus their defences on the Middle East and leave its Central African holdings to fend for themselves. The League members, in contrast are a motley crew of democracies, dictatorships and monarchies who are more unified by fear of Germany (and to a lesser extent Egypt) than anything else. Vesterrike, Britain and Spain are relatively free, but the Kaapreich has a history of forceful leadership to maintain its tenuous position and the vote is only given to its white inhabitants. Meanwhile, the Andean Union is in a constant state of emergency, with the Durani breathing down their necks and the Mexique are somewhere in the middle of the democracy-panic spectrum the League seems to possess.

Technology is slightly behind our world, with tanks and planes still being cumbersome whilst battleships still rule the seas. Yet it is ahead of ours in some ways as well, with the television becoming more readily available for the masses, albeit very grainy and many still prefer the radio. International travel is booming, in particular between Europe and Duran, with airships slowly loosing ground to heavier-than-air passenger planes. Aesthetically Western Europe and Nord Duran are enamoured by an alternate Art Deco movement whilst Germany is instead enamoured with a Neo-Gothic variant. Whilst the world is politically divided, science, trade and culture easily flow across borders, despite many League and Pactist politicians preferring if they didn't. This is what many hope will eventually stave off any future war. Whilst tensions remain high between the Pact and the League the memories of the German Wars grow ever fainter and a growing international pacifist movement is gaining momentum in the major powers. Détente is on the minds of many and the German Emperor is planning a state visit to the Neurheinisch Verein, a neutral but very closely aligned with Vesterrike, to discuss with the Versterriker President and British Prime Minister about a potential solution to the Italian problem. Hope remains high that peace may yet win the day, but both camps remain heavily armed and are dabbling into experimental fields of science in the hopes of devising new weapons in case war does rear its head, with nuclear science in particular being appealing to the two sides. It would take one wrong move to destroy all the progress that had been made and the world hopes it can avoid what would likely be the most deadly conflict the world would ever see.

Deutschland Deutschland Uber Alles in der Welt!

Love it.

I like, nicely done: a fine wank. A few questions, quibbles:

1. Why is Manchuria (the Qing homeland) a client state and not attached to the Qing puppet state, or, if filled with German, Russian, etc. settlers, not a part of the Empire proper?

2. Does Hungary rule over Bosnia and Serbia as puppets? Because if not, it’s “reward” is smaller than the OTL state was at times.

3. “Durani Dictatorship?” Does it have an actual name, or were you just phoning that part in? :D

4. Unless the areas it controls are rather more densely populated than OTL, Vesterrike needs some beefing up to be the dominant source of League manpower.

Bruce

Regarding the American national identity, well, most Americans still see themselves as Virginians, New Yorkers, Washabians, Georgians, etc, first. But yes, the densely populated north is just as important as the south.
Did the British have any reason to annex land from the only region in the US which had de Facto peace SI them during the War of 1812?
