Impact of post-Civil War American intervention against Spain and Maximilian?

The United States came close to intervening in Mexico at various points in time after the Civil War. It also had war moments where it closed in on war with Spain not long after the war. What would be the impact of a more muscular American foreign policy in the first decade after the Civil War assuming someone else ends up in Johnson's place. Maximilian ends up targeted right after the war and lets say a few years later Washington goes for Cuba.

What would be the impact for the US and in terms of North/South relations? From the papers at the time dealing with Maximilian was a big issue at the end of the war. A number of policymakers including in the administration and newspapers thought it could kill two birds with one stone... enforce the Monroe Doctrine and be a national unity venture of southern and northern soldiers and generals fighting together again.
