Habsburg Question...

Say a sovereign archduchess died...with only daughters...and only two under-10 year old nephews. Would her husband or child-nephews become the next archduke (as per pre-Pragmatic Sanction and pre-Imperial Austria succession laws.)

I don't think you could have a reigning Archduchess pre-Pragmatic Sanction... I believe her husband would take over, then the nephews, but I'm not sure.

The title of Archduke originally was the ruler of Austria, and since the title of Holy Roman Emperor became synonomous with Austria, the title of Archduke and Archduchess was used to denote the children of the Emperor. So since woman couldn't inherit the Austrian throne, forming a hereditary archduchy was impossible.

Granted, Maria Theresa was a rare case, but it did spark the War of the Austrian Succession.
