Anschluss in '34.

OTL Hitler attempted a Anschluss attempt in '34.
Following Dolfuss's assassination Hitler had the troops ready to March, and the Newspaper stories wrote.
Italy moved to support Austria, and Herr Hitler Backed Down.

Four years later Germany tried again.
Italy was on the outs with Britain/France over Africa. Italy's Military was not ready to Fight. Italy allowed the Anschluss.

Now in ATL.
Italy is on the Outs with Britain/France & the US over actions in Africa, Italy -Germany Relations are closer to OTL 1938. Italy allows the 1934 Anschluss.
this is 4 years earlier Than OTL, one year before Germany started rebuilding it's Military. But getting Austria's Army allows this to advance by a year.
Austria's Economy, as well as Rail & Roads, etc. get more integrated into Germany.
Less felling for Austria as separate both in Germany as well as internationally.

Assuming a roughly similar WW2 [ie 1939~1945];) ?What happens to Austria post WW2 ITTL?

But Austria is a more integrated part of Germany --Like Bavaria IOTL.
?Are you saying this is a POD leading to a break Germany into Separate Countries TL?

Yes, Austria would most likely be separated from Germany by the Allies.

Theoretically possible, but if their behaviour over the Rhineland two years later is anything to go by, my guess is that Hitler gets away with it.

Again, in theory, the Czechs could stop it if they were willing to act alone, but later experience suggests they probably wouldn't be.

Blithely assuming Austria wont fight in 1934 is rather presumptuous. In 1934 the Austrian government was far stronger vis-vis the Nazis and could match Germany in troop numbers and could count on Italian support.

Well, the OP asserts that ITTL Italy consents to this union of Germany and Austria. Not sure why they would do that; Mussolini really wanted a buffer zone between him and Hitler, and Dollfuss's Austria fit the bill perfectly.

If Italy does consent and Hitler goes in with his troops, it really depends on how much a fight the Austrians put up. If it's anything serious, this could bog down into static warfare in north and west Austria, with the smaller nations of eastern Europe trying to prop the Austrians up. Remember that the German army was rather small back then.

Whar do you mean more integrated? It would only be part of Germany for two additional year. There is no way the allies will kept it part of Germany after the war.

I'm actually slightly more interested in the pre and mid war angles than whether or not Germany would keep Austria in the post-war period. (Not bloodly likely unless you hand Germany some sort of victory or the war ends in a very different defeat.)

What kind of pre-war butterflies would have been generated by Germany getting Austria a couple of years earlier? (And apparently getting Italy to cozy up slightly earlier too.)

And what impact, however tiny, would those extra years of control over Austria have had when it came to the war itself?

I acctually meant post WW2, as the OP states. But yes, if Italy don't object Germany would get away with it in '34.

The problem wasn't just Italy, it was France. France signaled she would invade if Germany tried to march on Austria.

If they did, it was almost certainly a bluff.

If AJP Taylor can be believed, when French and Italian military staffs got together at the time of the Stresa Front, all they discussed was the defence of Alsace and South Tyrol - not even reoccupying the Rhineland. So I don't see it coming to a fight over Austria.
