  1. what if England hadn't become the global empire it did

The basic 'mechanics' of the Industrial Revolution were already known or knowable over most of Western Europe. In fact most of continental Europe was better educated, richer, had more rationalised judicial and administrative institutions, more modern financial systems, and had more natural...
  2. what if England hadn't become the global empire it did

Well, there's a reasonable chance that such a large change would mean that Britain never had an industrial revolution, and without that spark, we'd all still be living in a world with a late 18th century level of technology, whatever the geopolitical situation developed into.
  3. Without Warning

So, has anyone read it? (apologies if there's already a threat about this, I did a search but it turned up no results) Personally I thought it was great. Although I do have a problem suspending my disbelief when it came to John Birmingham's scenario of what would happen to Europe...
  4. Without Warning-new from John Birmingham

I read some of the Aussie reviews of the book. I liked his previous stuff, but to be honest, when I learnt that Western Europe descends into civil war I sort of lost interest. I mean, that's so completely ridiculous, I can only suspend disbelief so far.
  5. Earlier Soviet Union Collapse?

The Soviet economy stopped growing at some point between 1974 and 1977 and began to shrink. Anytime after that it was ripe for a fall.
  6. Prime Minister or President Elizabeth Windsor of the Republic of Britain

One has to have a certain minimum level of natural ability to perform in public in order to be a successful politician. Plenty of people are lively and amusing in person but freeze when the spotlight is turned on them and such people do not become political leaders. The Queen's upbringing...
  7. Prime Minister or President Elizabeth Windsor of the Republic of Britain

Only their better stuff. The Day Before You Came When I Kissed the Teacher Andante Andante You know, the real quality stuff they did.
  8. Prime Minister or President Elizabeth Windsor of the Republic of Britain

Those Scandanavian ones don't interest me either I'm afraid...
  9. Prime Minister or President Elizabeth Windsor of the Republic of Britain

I wasn't referring to the content of her utterances, but her manner, expression, body language, voice etc, all of which indicate that she is about as far away from a 'natural performer' as you can get.
  10. Prime Minister or President Elizabeth Windsor of the Republic of Britain

I have not in the past, and have no plans to f**k the Queen. Thank you.
  11. Prime Minister or President Elizabeth Windsor of the Republic of Britain

Well, he's not particularly charismatic of course, but he has a certain amount of presence and is no where near as stiff as the Queen is in public.
  12. Prime Minister or President Elizabeth Windsor of the Republic of Britain

She doesn't seem to have any of the personal qualities of a successful politician. She's awful on TV, an extremely bad public speaker, and projects no warmth or any other detectable human emotion. I'm not saying she isn't a lovely person, one-on-one, but she does seem incapable of connecting...
  13. WI Britain in Vietnam?

Economically, if it was a significant deployment, then it would have worsened the UK's position and the position of the government. Politically, it would have been a hugely divisive issue, extremely unpopular with large swathes of the population. Expect mass student uprisings and wildcat...
  14. Mortar shells over Downing St

Yes, if there cabinet members killed still leave the Conservative Parliamentary party with a majority there certainly wouldn't be a 'national' government. But there would still be overwhelming pressure for a General Election within the year. I think Ljofa's suggestion that Douglas Hurd would...
  15. What if ROBOT was implemented?

It's extremely unlikely that the UK would seek to abandon social democracy. It's far, far too popular. Not even Thatcher touched the NHS. Likewise a flat-tax, that's simply not going to happen. What we'd have would be a milder form of the 1980s happening in the 50s. Which means economic...
  16. What if ROBOT was implemented?

"Conservatives of the fifties have had a particularly bad press for their willingness to stick with the Attlee consensus, allowing the UK's underlying economic weakness to worsen. Yet there was one moment when Britain might have experienced a Thatcher-sized jolt, a British revolution thirty...
  17. London builds the Millennium Tower

Yeah, but busses that allow those sorts of consequences for human error concern me. Bendy busses don't have that problem. Though they can come awfully close to pavements on bends.
  18. London builds the Millennium Tower

Better than a mushy hole in the ground. :D
  19. London builds the Millennium Tower

No, from what I ca remember they were working as designed. The bus drivers simply took corners a little too fast and the law of gravity took over.
  20. London builds the Millennium Tower

I like the tower pictured, and I like the Gherkin. The building I really love is 'The Shard of Glass' that'll be going up soon. That looks fantastic.
