Challenge: East-West Civil War

Perhaps a pod where there is a natural strait at Panama, leading to earlier and more extensive settlement of the West? What would be the point of contention though?

if i remember correctly one of aaron burr's crazy little ideas was to start a rebellion of western states (then ohio and those near there).

How about if the US makes it more difficult to become a state? (Perhaps in order to keep the North South balance, Congress refuses to admit any more states (select what point of history).

This would freeze the natural political development of these areas, and make the desire for self government a central point of contention.

As a result, the East would see the West as a place to obtain raw materials and as a market, not as a political entity.

from wikipedia in regards to the election of 1824

"The result of the election was confused. Besides Jackson and Crawford, John Quincy Adams and House Speaker Henry Clay were also candidates. Jackson received the most popular votes (but not a majority, and four states had no popular ballot). The Electoral votes were split four ways, with Jackson again having a plurality. Since no candidate received a majority, the election was made by the House of Representatives, which chose Adams. Jackson denounced this result as a "corrupt bargain" because Clay gave his support to Adams, who later appointed Clay as Secretary of State. Jackson called for the abolition of the Electoral College in his first annual message to Congress as President.[17] Jackson's defeat burnished his political credentials, however, since many voters believed the "man of the people" had been robbed by the "corrupt aristocrats of the East."

Now when the election was thrown into the House they could only choose from the top three candidates electoral vote wise. Now lets say that Crawford, who suffered a massive stroke in 1823 suffers another one right before the election of 1824. This narrows the candidates to Jackson, Adams and Clay.

In this situation Clay as Speaker of the House doesnt have to settle for just being Kingmaker. I think this might be enough to spark a East Vs. West civil war. Andrew Jackson leading the west and Clay and Adams leading the East.

Hillbilly overlords! Shut up sir. Westerners could destroy the East side, If we use our natural resources, which the East depends upon. WASHINGTON STATE SUCCECSION!

This sounds good! I ought to think about this.
