22 I think Carter would be under tremendous pressure to Do Something. He may have to do an Iraq style invasion. Maybe this would help him beat Reagan, or maybe his damage would be too great.

10 Probably most of the original states would still not establish single state churches, since non-establishment was a major concept among the founding fathers. However, as new states were added to the US, they might adopt state churches (LDS in Utah particularly comes to mind) and states carved out of largely Catholic Mexico (and Louisiana) might establish Roman Catholicism. An interesting side speculation is the possibility this might slow down or eliminate some of the push to acquire the SW because the predominantly Protestant and anti-Catholic US of the mid 19th century might not want to have formally Catholic states in the Union.

19 Religion would still be important in US politics, although now it would be the liberal, pacifist, and socially active religion associated with the Catholic anti-war movement, protestant/evangelical black civil rights movement, and their eccumenical white civil rights supporters. You'll have conservatives attacking the mix of politics and religion and liberals looking to the churches for support. Bottom line, religoin will always be an important part of American political life.

20 Most (but not all) states would eventually liberalize or eliminate their anti-abortion laws anyway by 2000. Since the right to abortion would have come about as a result of the normal political process and legislative action rather than court mandate, opposition to abortion rights would be limited. It would not be the decisive issue in the US as it is today.

22. All-out War between the US and Iran, with US possibly receiving diplomatic support of most European allies and heavy negotiations/tradeoffs with Soviets to ensure they don't mess things up - maybe we don't object to Afghan invasion in 1980. Saddam Hussein cements his role as chief US ally in Persian gulf and we support his later invasions of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Rise of militant Islam delayed for many years. If war goes well (which is iffy since Democrats always like to meddle and Carter had gut military capabilities), Carter wins reelection in a landslide and Republicans never taken over by Christian Radical Right or Economic Reaganites (see 20 above for same Republican outcome). Muskie is next president.
