WI no three mile island meltdown?

The Three Mile Island meltdown never occurs. Nuclear power plant
contracts are never cancelled, and new construction accelerates in the US.
How does this change history? Heres my stab

1. With no 3 mile island meltdown and with a focus on his corruption Nixon declares a national emergency, suspends the election for duration, abolish the writ on habius corpus as Lincoln did in the CW and arrest the anti-war and hippie movement leaders. All this was before the Demo Party committed suicide by nominating McGovern, before Wallace was taken out of the race by suppossed lone gunman Arthur Bremer, before the failure of the NVA offensive, and before Nixon abolished the draft for Nam duty. But if no distaster then Nixon feels able to unleast a coup

2. The Vietnam war ended for good in 1976 when the American expeditionary
corps was withdrawn from Northern Annam in return for a peaceful partition
of Indochina. The South East Asian Defense League
( RVN, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Malayasia, Singapore, Philippines) and
Trade Association is linked to the North Atlantic Trade Association ( US,
Canada, UK, Iceland, Greenland, Eire,
Carib, Central America, Japan, ROK, ROC, HK, Macau, PNG, Solomons, Tonga,
Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Kiribatu, W Samoa, Chile). both are linked by
trade and military pacts with a reviving Dengist China and are oppossed by
North Vietnam, Mongolia, India, and North Korea.
3. As the collapse of the 70's didn't happen US GNP is 10 years ahead of
today.
4. Nuclear power, SPS, supersonic transports, asteroid bases - we have it
all and then some - a capital spending boom that kept the US and allied
economies humming from 1972 to date.
5. Limited elections were held in 1978 with full restoration of
constitutional government in 1980 - however a national amnesty enforced by a seperate set of security coourts and including a constitutional ammendment
enabling the same remain - the military / space / tech budget is also
partially self financing and the military reserve the right of
reintervention.
6. There is an American exile population of 10-15 million scattered through
the EU, East Europe and Latin America. They are the 60's generation types
and military deserters. There has never been and will never be an amnesty.
7. Europe and the US are formally allied but the US 7th Army left Germany in
the late 70's and never returned. Europe has political and economic links
in both directions and trusts neither.
8. the Kennedy emmigration acts never passed and US emmigration is far more
driven by economic need ( techs, agricultural workers, domestics), often on
short term contracts. There are 10-15 million members of the Euro right who
have found homes in North America plus at least as many from the nations
allied with US - exservicemen claiming green cards for joint military
service, local capitalists who did the embassy a favor, etc.
9. The Cold War wound down in the 80's without the collapse of the USSR.
The Russian invasion of Adfghanistan was followed by a joint invasion of
Pakistan with India leaving the Afghanis without a rear area to supply from.
The Mid East is full of Afghani and Paki refugees. Russia and India are
as hated as Israel.
10. Civil liberties are limited compared to OTL. Civil Rights are worse
legally and better socially. More Americans have been overseas and
discovered how alike they really are compared to the rest of the world.
More of the hotheads were swapped for Gulag prisoners one time or another.
Unhappy minorities emmigrate. A different economic system means that the
deindustrialization of the US was not allowed to happen. More urban areas
have 'good' jobs for factory worker types. Crime never became a major
option because of a more repressive regeime. Schools were not allowed to
decay in the name of justice. The joys of the 60's and 70's were swept
away but so was a lot of societal bullshit. Japan and East Asia generally
were not allowed to run one way trade wars. More Americans work in industry
and more have technical backrounds. America makes capital and advanmced
goods. The industries that have been allowed to attrophy are the low wage
consumer goods. Means the MidWest and East Coast are stronger and the
Southeast somewhat weaker. The US and Mexico never made up in the 80's.
Mexico still casts a wary of on the Yanqui led common market that surrounds
it. The border is partially militarized and illegal immigration is minimal.
The car washers in Los Angeles are Indonesian, Guatemalan or Jamacian, not
Mexican. Up and coming Mexicans enlist in the US military so as to earn
green cards for their families. Or the accumulate capital and buy landed
emmigrant status in Canada.
11. Compared to Europe we are repressive, less open about sex and drugs and
somewhat behind the curve in the more 'hip' arts and fashion. We are also
ahead in consumer goods, standard of living, high and low tech, electronics,
computers, media and pop culture. It is an exagerated form of the 50's Euro-americna differences.

How on earth do you get that from Three Mile Island not screwing up? Nixon wasn't really any more corrupt than most politicians. And I highly doubt that he'd declare a national emergency because of what? People criticizing him? That ain't gonna fly.

he wouldn't really declare a national emergency per se... He would act harshley and decisively against the hippies/antiwar/pro communists my wording was off...

Nixon resigned in 1974. Three Mile Island occurred in 1979. If TMI hadn't occurred, it would have had no effect on Nixon. Had TMI not occurred, the environmentalists would still have made their anti-nuclear arguments, they would just have had to wait until Chernobyl.

alternatively, have Three Mile Island go boom in much the same way as Chernobyl.

Ouch.... now that would have shut down every nuke plant in the US for a long while for new guidelines and inspections to be done. Chances are that many may never have been restarted. The result would have been the building of more oil/coal burning power plants.

Now to mention all the 3 eyed kids that would be born in the years to follow. Just look at the horrific images of the children that were born in the regions most effected by Chernobyl.

Chernobyl wasn't the monster most people say it was, largely because the blast at the reactor launched the worst of its contaminants miles into the atmosphere, and it landed all over the world, mostly in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. Spread over millions of square miles the radiation didn't make that much of a difference. And a blast like what happened at Chernobyl would be stopped by the 16-inch-thick concrete containment vessel around the reactor.

US Reactors aren't the rickety messes Chernobyl was, and nuclear reactors can be made meltdown-proof. Canada's CANDU reactors are one such type of idiot-proof reactor. 3 eyed kids? I haven't seen that. I have seen very high numbers of cancers, but severe deformations haven't happened, at least that I have seen.
